20190912 Flair Espresso Classic… learning to make espresso

Finally found something that I am willing to plonk my money on to make my own espresso at home than always have to wait for my next visit to the cafe.
This is the Flair Classic with stainless steel tamper. I never made espresso myself before, so I had to go through so many shots and a full bag of beans or more over a week or so until I was able to make something decent and take this video.
Learned a lot. Turns out my Delonghi grinder which I use for the usual coffee maker, pourovers, Aeropress, French Press, cold brews, cannot go fine enough for espresso. At its finest, the water still easily goes through so I can’t apply the pressure required. Also not wanting to invest on another grinder, I bought that cheap grinder from IUIGA (a pretend Muji store). Cost less than SGD 20, includes an extra mason jar even. No micro adjustment though, but it does get me to espress grind territory.
Learned that the Signature PRO have a bigger brew head and portafilter so it can take more grinds and water. I would have wanted that, but the thing cost more. I prefer the color of the Classic anyway.
If you’re getting one, I suggest you get the one with the pressure gauge, so you’ll have a visual guide when pressing if you’re in the correct range. The bottomless/naked portafilter aside from being easier to clean could help you troubleshoot if you’re tamping correctly, if the waters are being channeled on the sides, etc.
