Step 1: Steam the Milk
Pour ice cold milk into the stainless steel pitcher. Insert the thermometer into the milk and position the pitcher under the steam wand so that the wand is just under the top of the milk. Keeping the wand near the top makes more foam, which is exactly what you want for this particular kind of coffee drink. Steam the milk while keeping the wand just under the surface.
Step 2: Pull Your Espresso Shot
If you have never done this, you might want to take a look at the”How To Make Espresso” first. Follow the directions for your machine to pull a single shot of espresso. The ideal extraction time is anywhere between 18 to 22 seconds.
You may also choose to have a double shot of espresso. Remember to be careful as the machine has hot areas. Do not burn yourself. Before adding the foam, you may add sugar or the sweetener of your choice.
Step 3: Add the Foam
Take your spoon and the pitcher of steamed foamy milk. Using your spoon, carefully drop the foamed milk onto the top of the espresso, a spoon at a time until the surface has a nice layer of “spotted” froth on it. Enjoy your homemade cafe macchiato.
Step 4: Variations
If your espresso machine does not have a steam wand, you can heat the milk in a double boiler on the stove slowly, being careful not to burn it, while using a milk frother with a plunger or an electric milk mixer to create the froth. Alternatively, you can use a Moka Pot or Handpresso to pull your shot.
